Dual circulation period

During 1–15 January 2015, both currencies – the litas and the euro – can be used for making payments for goods and services in Lithuania; however, the change, except for the exceptions provided for in the Law of the Republic of Lithuania on the Euro Adoption, will be given only in euro.

Exceptions:

  • automated points of sale: where there is no cashier: if there is no possibility to make settlements in both litas and euro, only euro can be used;
  • public transport and taxis: when a payment is made in litas, change may be given in litas as well, and when paying in euro, the change must be given in euro.
  • where there are justified reasons why this cannot be done (the validity of the reason is assessed on a case-by-case basis).
